An ESD brush is a specialized cleaning tool designed to prevent the damaging effects of electrostatic discharge (ESD) when working with sensitive electronic components like circuit boards, computer parts, and other delicate hardware. Unlike regular brushes, which can generate a static charge during use, ESD brushes are engineered to safely dissipate or ground static electricity, thus protecting the components from harm.

How ESD brushes work

 

The key to an ESD brush's effectiveness lies in its construction, which typically includes conductive or static-dissipative materials for both the bristles and the handle. When brushed over a charged surface, the conductive bristles provide a path for the static charge to flow through the handle, through the user (if properly grounded with a wrist strap or heel grounders), and into the ground. This controlled discharge prevents the sudden, potentially damaging discharge that can occur with conventional brushes
